how to meditate & what is meditation?
Hi I’m X and I want know about the meditation, yoga & some other details about that.
There is a lot of misunderstanding behind what meditation is but it is nothing more than contemplation, the practice of focusing ones mind on to one thing- the object of the meditation. This can be a particular teaching or prayer, or sound, an image of say a Buddha, a candle, ones own breath, or many other such phenomena.
The Buddhas first meditative state happened when he was a child, as he sat watching a farmer push his plough back and forward through a field in a harvest festival he fell into a deep meditative state, into what we Buddhists call his first Dhyana.
As I am a long-time Buddhist practitioner I was compelled to aid a request to describe and explain what meditation is all about, I wrote a ‘manual’ for single-pointed meditation, which I consider to be the most effective meditation (I have had my best results doing this), as follows and it’s rather detailed. This is what meditation consists of:
"The most effective meditations I find require pre-planning. I suggest you find a beautiful natural spot where you won’t be disturbed- for example a mountain, a cave, by a river, a cliff, a beach or of course, beneath a tree. The time doesn’t matter really, though I have heard that the Dalai Lama prefers to meditate at Dawn.
Wear loose, comfortable clothes, drink only water for the days before and during and the less you eat, the better (so long as you don’t totally starve yourself)- especially avoid meat. Just before you prepare to start, have a cool shower or something first, go to the toilet, blow your nose, and turn off that phone!
Make sure you are mentally ready, not tired or feeling excessive emotion/excitement, as these can be big obstacles to your session.
Begin by burning a stick of incense and saying a prayer to the Buddhas and innumerable Bodhisattvas, requesting for the meditation to be fruitful, and for all positive karma to be dedicated to the attainment of enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
Find a position which is comfortable for you- I find that half-lotus is best for beginners and full lotus for the advanced, place your upright hands softly on your lap, right hand above the left, and press your thumbs together gently, which forms a beautiful lotus shape (your spirit is preparing to rise from the muddy depths and flower into its full potential).
Move about for a while until you find your most comfortable, settled position, then straighten your back as upright as you can (without stress/force)- this will keep your mind alert and awake: it’s important that you maintain a good posture, and you should check it every now and then. Raise your head as though you were balancing a book on top of it, and pull your chin slightly in and down towards your neck. Put your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
Now prepare your breath- breathe in deep through your nose so it goes right down to your stomach, and then breathe out through your nose, this will slow your breath (at a pace that suits you). Allow your eyelids to lower almost all the way and start counting your breathes like so:
"Breathing in…1…Breathing out…2…Breathing in…3…Breathing out…4…" and so on until you reach 10, and then start over. It is natural to become distracted, so when distracting thoughts come, become aware of them, let them go and start over again from 1. I suggest you do this for around 20-30 minutes before you begin the actual meditation (this may seem like meditation, but it isn’t).
Then stop counting your breathes, just focus on the natural sensation, like so:
"Breathing in…I know I am breathing in….Breathing out…I know I am breathing out…."
"Breathing in deeper… I know I am breathing in…Breathing out slower…I know I am breathing out…."
I must emphasize that you shouldn’t be controlling or forcing your breaths, they should be naturally occurring.
If you continue this for another 30-60 minutes you will feel very calm and focused.
When the time is right, stop thinking…
Focus on the sole sensation of the air moving inside and outside of you. Your breath may even seem to stop altogether when you get deep into this point.
If you continue this practice, hopefully you will experience your first absorption (Dhyana) in time. It is not easy, and if you do not right away- please don’t feel disheartened, keep practicing. I promise you it will be worth it, the first Dhyana is not unlike a beautiful calm wave of euphoria which lasts for hours, if not days, and it brings other benefits which will certainly transcend the meditation session- such as the wisdom of discernment.
When you finish, be very gentle with yourself and move very slowly, have a light stretch and don’t try standing up right away. It’s likely that you will have lost most of the sensations in your body.
I strongly recommend that you read up on the 4 Dhyanas so you will know what to expect when they are attained:
Those who meditate: Have you ever experienced headaches related to meditating?
I seem to have some form of chronic headache… and since I meditate regularly (2-3 times a day for 45 minutes) I was thinking that this may be the cause. I often have the sensation that the headache worsens while meditating, and also sensations that parts of my head are inflating, almost as if a blood vessel were expanding (you know how people’s veins throb in their forehead sometimes when they are angry?).
Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks
Yes, when I come out of meditation too fast. Take some time with your eyes closed after stopping your practice, moving around a bit to get the system back into activity gently.
sylvia browne or other psychics?

My cat is possessed by the Devil; how do I exorcise it without killing it?
Lately I’ve been having some problems in my life. I read a self-help book, and it told me to meditate and think about my past. I did, and I’ve come to the conclusion I’ve made some bad decisions in the last 4 years. I believe I was influence by an evil spirit. And this spirit resides in my cat. I must remove the spirit from my cat. She’s 4 years old. I don’t want to do anything that would hurt her permanently. But for her sake and my own I must absolve Satan’s spirit from her body. Help appreciated.
I won’t read any joke answers or answers that make fun of me or my situation. It is serious and dire. I believe my cat could any day die from her possession.
put your cat in the oven pre-heat to about 80 degrees and put her in for about 30 mins and the devil will leave your cat and your 4 year old cat will be free
but you need to make sure when you see a red glow from your cat and then goes away get your cat out of there because it will die if you dont get your cat out of the oven within 3 secs from the red glow stopping
How can I forget past actions that are bad memories now and move on?
I know this question sounds stupid. But I always get upset or mad at myself for things in my immediate past, like mistakes I made. My mind keeps going over them and regretting them and it just make me upset. How can I let go a little?
I also get this problem for bad/disgusting/terrifying images, experiences, or things I see or witness, that will haunt me when I’m trying to go to sleep and keep me up.
Any advice? Can I meditate it away?
making mistakes is part of life. learn by them and don’t repeat them. stop dwelling on the past and think about your future. try listening to music when you are trying to fall asleep.
HOW TO MEDITATE PROPERLY?
I have done all tricks (mantra, breathing, visualization………) but its gone to failure……..plz give me effective tips to meditate properly……explain it by step by step plz……………………………
THANX
Pure meditation is like pure love. Its easy to talk about but very few ever experience it. Having said that, let me tell you first what meditation is NOT: its not visualization, its not listening to affirmations about getting rich over and over and its not listening to some binaural beats or guided meditation cum hypnotic induction like program. (Although all these things can definitely help when you are starting your journey.)
Pure meditation is pure silence, pure void. Pure meditation is total unity. Pure meditation is transcending the ego mind and connecting with the divine. It doesn’t happen overnight and it can very well be the hardest thing you have ever tried. But if you stay at it, entering a state of pure meditation doesn’t take time, it happens in a jump. Its a jump in consciousness. And when you learn to get there, to rest there, to remain there… life becomes miraculous.
Anyway, here is one of the simplest meditation techniques you can learn:
1. Sit comfortably.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Breathe in and breathe out naturally.
4. In BETWEEN the breathes, notice there is a place of absolute silence and void. Where there is no breath, no thoughts, nothing.
5. Focus on that void, focus on that silence.
6. When you need to breathe, breathe in and out and focus on that place of pure silence and void again.
That’s it.
This is the very first Tantric meditation and also (as it is said) the only meditation that the Buddha practiced in his 6 years of seclusion and meditation.
Hope this helps.
How do you meditate, like in yoga?
I’ve tried, but i just can’t get myself to clear my mind and concentrate.
And also, what are some good yoga sequences to do for toning the body that actually work well?
yoga is easy to learn, but it’s hard to explain here, the best way to learn it is to go here: http://www.learnthis.org/do_yoga.php , I hope this helps,
good luck!
How to have visualizations while you meditate?
Is there anyway that while you meditate, you can make a visualization in your mind that is extremely vivid? I can never do this, and I meditate intensely. Is there anyway to practice it? Is it even possible to do it?
I have trouble with all three of those things. Picturing it in my mind, and sticking to that image.
The reason I am trying to do this is because I am trying to keep my mind focused on an imaginary object in my head, or scenery, that might make it easier to ignore any possible distractions (I have A.D.D)
like I said, the reason I want to have visualizations is to focus on the visualization and not be distracted.
Look at a lot of travel books and think about going there. What would life be like there? I love to snorkel so I love going to the ocean. Sometimes it helps to have a calm soothing music in the background. Get your imagination going. Go for a walk in the woods. Do things and then remember the activity. Hope this helps.
Has anybody used the sylva life system?
I would like to learn how to meditate and I want to know if is a good system…
I’m not familiar with it, I’ve had a brief look at it. all I can say is that if they request monies for their knowledge move on. Any knowledge they claim to have is available free, its all based on Buddhism and Taoism.
Use the videos on Youtube to learn how to meditate, here is one to get you started.

And this one shows the benefits of meditation. kind of anyway.

How to come in contact with my guides..?
How should I meditate in order to come in contact with my guides?
Put the thought out, with your mind. That you wish for your guides to make themselves known to you, in a way that you will understand and recognize. But you must be specific. Specify that you wish for ONLY your truest guides, who have only your best interests at heart, be allowed to come forward. Because if you don’t, you WILL get phonies trying to fool you. Happened to me.
How will you know your guide. Your true guide will make contact via the heart. If you have to ask, "was that my guide?" the answer is no. If you doubt in any way, send it away, because it wasn’t your guide. You will know your guide, in a way you may not even completely understand. Because you knew them before you incarnated upon the earth, so they will feel familiar to you.
Also, the person below who said that your guide is that small, still voice in the back of your mind? They’re correct. Meditating, learning to quiet the mind "chatter" will help you learn to listen better. Once the mind chatter is quiet, it’s easier to hear their voice. Again, ask them to make the contact in a way that you will easily understand and recognize. And then wait.
Always protect yourself with light before you try. It may take you a while before you make contact. It took me two weeks of daily meditation before I made contact.
